The Goonies (1985)
This is an Oregonian classic. Based on the Oregon Coast, the story follows a group of young misfits as they embark on the adventure of a lifetime. Following an old treasure map made by the legendary “One-Eyed Willy, '' the kids stumble upon more hidden mysteries than they anticipated. Follow the traps and treasures featured in this movie. The fun adventure comedy is filmed and based in Astoria, Oregon and other scenic locations, including the Goonie House and Haystack Rock, that are popular today. The film has a run time of 114 minutes, and is rated PG.
One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)
Based on the book by Eugene local Ken Kasey, this movie follows Randle McMurphy as he’s sent to an Oregon work farm. In a purposeful attempt, McMurphy proceeds to get himself sent to a mental institute. Quickly befriending the other patients, there is only one true rival in his experience. In a battle of wills against the head nurse Ratched, he continues to find himself in and out of trouble. This thriller/drama is shot all across Oregon, including Salem, Oregon State Hospital and the North Oregon Coast. If you enjoy this film, check out the prequel series from 2020 created by Evan Romansky. The film has a run time of 133 minutes, and is rated R.
Short Circuit (1986)
Short Circuit is a heartwarming feature film shot in the coastal town of Astoria, highlighting with many iconic landmarks, Star of the show, Number 5, is a Cold War military robot shocked to life during a demonstration of his abilities. The newly living machine finds himself escaping the NOVA facility and entering the outside world, where he soon meets Stephanie Speck, making a friend to teach and explore the new world with him. Together they try to evade the NOVA agents looking to recover and dismantle him. Check out this great film for any lover of history or unlikely friendships. The film is 98 minutes and is rated PG.
